According to IDTechEX, in the year 2032, the demand for electric motors by the automotive industry will reach more than 100 million units. They will use different technologies that are still emerging today, such as axial flow, wheel or switched reluctance motors.

DTechEx analyzes the key parameters of
emerging technologies that will be used by the engines of future electric cars.
Besides the battery , which is the most expensive component
in an electric car, and power electronics , the electric motor is the third
critical component in its powertrain. The consultancy IDTechEx has published a
report ( Electric Motors for Electric Vehicles 2022-2032 ) in which it analyzes
the market for this component, evaluating and comparing trends and offering a
forecast of its status in 2032. The emerging technologies that are currently in
days are still being developed will have their market share within a decade.
According to the consultancy, in 2032, the automotive
industry will require a volume of electric motors that will exceed 100 million
units each year . Although electric traction motors have a long history dating
back to the 1800s, the technologies are still evolving, with new designs,
performance improvements and innovative materials in their construction. Types
of motors such as axial flow motors or the total elimination of rare earth
materials from their composition will end up taking part of the future market.
To evaluate the performance of an electric motor, different metrics are used depending on the objectives to be achieved. Among these are the most important power density and torque , which are responsible for driving dynamics. The size and weight of each unit also play a role, allowing designers to gain space for occupants and cargo areas, increasing travel comfort.
Another of the critical areas of electric motors is their
efficiency . Improving it means a lower consumption of the energy stored in the
batteries, which translates directly into an increase in autonomy , either by
allowing the implementation of less bulky batteries or by making better use of
their energy capacity.
The electric vehicle market has adopted different solutions
for each case, depending on the required needs. In many cases, a grouping of
options can be used to provide the best overall solution for each vehicle. Each
of the know-hows has its pros and cons in terms of performance and cost of
materials and their supply.
