Subconscious influence on the web: do we own our decisions?
Many times we believe that advertising does not affect us or that we are the owners of all our decisions, but this is not always the case. Yes, it can be said that there are people who are more conscious than others when it comes to consuming: they make a list of their needs, compare prices and reflect on each transaction they make. But even these 'model consumers' are affected by the bombardment of ads and trends . techwadia
Advertising is constantly evolving and there are many ways in which it is presented, from the more traditional advertising on posters or advertisements in the media to ' instagramers' and ' youtubers' . In addition, the way of transmitting messages also evolves: more importance is given to brand image, sensations or associations, selling products and services as experiences. But not everything goes, although in digital services it is more complicated to regulate.
Subliminal advertising is illegal, like deceptive
advertising, according to Law 34/1988, of November 11, General Advertising .
But more and more cases of subconscious influence are emerging, such as
Cambridge Analytica and a multitude of hoaxes or ' fakes news' that sometimes
act as advertising for certain products, such as the three-euro Lidl cream .
The
Spinner: Subconscious Advertising Service
Last week we could read the article of the technology news
portal Microsiervos " The Spinner: the disturbing service of"
subconscious advertising "that is banned in Europe and that nobody knows
if it works or is pure scam ". Alvy
, editor of the blog, tells in the article how the subconscious advertising
website, The Spinner , makes 'subconscious influence' a business , which,
incidentally, is also illegal in our country. They sell the possibility of
introducing an idea in the mind of the person that the contractor of the
service wants, even in his own mind. Ideas like: quitting smoking, driving
safely, or proposing to your partner. The catalog is very diverse.
In other articles on the subject such as " New Service
Promises to Manipulate Your Wife Into Having Sex With You " by Rolling
Stone they question whether this service works or is it simply a scam and the
methodology on how its results could be verified. This illegal 'service' with a
questionable reputation shows us a future outlook, as if it were a dystopian
television series. Services or scams like these make us have to be more and
more critical with the decisions we make and be alert regarding the information
we consume.
